Re: Story about a man who fell in love with Texas
Here are some impressions from our first day …
Men at work ...
We had a nice talk with the rangers.
First thing they said was: " You guys really doing it the hard way "
They were surprised that we hunt with traditional bows.
We did see some deer but no shots taken.
Mainly, we have explored and scouted the area that day.
All in all we had a great day.

Back at the ranch ...
Apart from the fact that Fred got lost in the bushes and had a close encounter with a jumping cactus …. ... we all had a great time at Amistad.
Fred and Chris - exhausted but smiling ...

Chris went back to San Antonio.
He had to go back to work.
Fred and I had the opportunity to stay at the ranch to hunt. Thanks Amigo

and finally ….
first Texas deer down …
The deer comes in at about 18 yards - she is looking at me - staring me down - I am at full draw - her eyes are getting bigger and bigger - pick a spot - my back muscles are starting to cramp - the doe starts walking towards me - I am not able to release - my body started shaking - I closed my eyes and when I opened them again the doe was gone ……
All I could see was a clear blue sky !!!
I was laying on my back, staring at the sky ....
Apparently I fell asleep from sheer exhaustion and began to dream ….
While I was still thinking about this dream, I noticed a movement to my right ... I see a doe … am I still dreaming ?
No !!!!
This time I'm not dreaming - it's real, real, real ….

Thank you all again for coming along ...

Re: Story about a man who fell in love with Texas
Let`s continue ...
Found me a nice and promising looking spot the other day.
Waterhole with heavy used trails, fresh tracks all over the place !!!!!
I placed myself up in a tree ….. waiting for something to walk by …
….. about 30 minutes later I had some does coming in … my heart started pounding …
and then, just out of the blue, a nice 8 pointer stood underneath my tree … just a tad too far right for taking a shot …no window to shoot through …. come on boy, 3 more steps to the left and you are mine !!!!
As the pounding of my heart went crazy, beating like a POW WOW drum he spooked … circled around and was gone ….
While I was still wondering why he spooked, I heard something coming in to my left … I see something big ….. it`s brown and huge ... ….. calm down - don`t forget to pick a spot ….. here he comes ….. yeah, keep walking ….. aaaaaand finally …. here it is … %x=&"?#% …
Went back there next morning.
Guess what happened ????
Yes, cow showed up again and started mooing like crazy.
------------------------------------------------------------------
We had a couple of more days to kill before meeting up with Chris again.
So we went to see a friend of mine .....
Here we are at "Smitty`s" (owner of Brush Country Bowhunting) near the town of Freer.
meeting of the generations ...
here i am shooting a Black Swan Wave Bow (made by Black Swan Archery) - first time looking at that bow I thought warped limbs because of hot Texas climate - bout no - done on purpose - very interesting limb design here … it`s smooth drawing and fast ...

All in all we had a joyful day .... flinging arrows and sharing hunting stories
That is what a hunting camp is supposed to be
more to come ....

on the way to "Hog Island" ....

at hog island ....
… took a shot at a big boar, hit the shield - no pass through - he went crazy - squealing like hell - he circled around with that bright yellow fletching sticking out of his shoulder …. splashing mud and water all over the place ….
… as he opened up his circle and run towards me - you know what I did ????
I dropped my bow, grabbed my knife and started running - had to find out he was not charging me - he disappeared into the open water ….. puuhhha ?!?!?!!!
… there was no chance for a second shot - this all happened within a couple of seconds and he scared the hell out of me !!!
I could hear him splashing through the water for a while, leaving me and my shaking knees behind ….
… here is where he disappeared ...
after 40 minutes I took off my boots and trousers and started searching with the help of my buddy Chris …
here is what we found ….
I was not much into arguing with an Alligator - particularly not in pants and barefoot .... so I hope he enjoyed that free meal ...
Even though we did not recover that hog it was still a satisfying hunt !!!
more to come ... and thank you all for enjoying ...

Yeap I do agree with Kibok, very cool pictures once more, and an interesting enconter with the gator
Gator is not legal in Texas??? With a reel and some "solid" string, that could have been interesting...
Thanks for the story,
See you,
J-F

Here are some exhausted trad bowhunters …
exhausted but still smiling …
… talking about being exhausted - I was done here ...
We have had plenty of fun so far - but hunting the "hard way" is some hard work indeed.
Even though not a single arrow was fired, and nothing has been killed, I am still satisfied at the end of the day …
It is the hunt - not just the killing.
happy trails ...
Daniel
